Transforming agriculture with integrated solar technology for sustainability.

History

Soliculture was founded in 2012 based on research from the Physics department at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Founders were physics professors Dr. Glenn Alers and Dr. Sue Carter.

Innovation

Green light is reflected from plants (that is why they are green). Therefore photosynthesis is not very efficient in the green portion of the spectrum. The highest efficiency for red light. We use a photoluminescent dye to shift green light to red light to increase photosynthetic efficiency and help crops grow.

Crop Improvement

Color shifting has several advantages for crop production. One is lower stress from reduced (inefficient) green light. The enhanced red light stimulates plant growth and compensated for light lost to embedded solar cells.

Light Spectrum

Extensive research at the University of California at Santa Cruz was able to optimize the blue/green/red ratio for optimum plant growth.
